What is the difference between Corian and granite?

These days, Corian surfaces have gained special popularity among individuals. Many people looking to change and transform their kitchen design certainly consider this type of stone as well.

In this article, we intend to compare Corian stone with another common and longstanding stone, namely Granite.

 Composition Materials

Composition materials of Corian stone:

Most people cannot distinguish Corian stone from granite at first glance. DuPont Corporation has truly provided an amazing simulation of natural stone.

Corian, like all other solid surface stones, is created in a laboratory. It consists of 60 percent aluminum trihydrate, which is obtained from refining bauxite ore. This material is then combined with an acrylic liquid called methyl methacrylate. These two materials constitute nearly 98 percent of the final product. The remaining 2 percent includes colors and other filler textures.

It is worth mentioning that Corian surfaces, which are a type of solid surface, were first manufactured by DuPont and are sold under the trademark Corian.

Granite is an igneous rock that exists deep within the Earth. As magma cools while approaching the Earth's surface, it stabilizes materials and forms granite. This stone is a mixture of minerals, primarily composed of feldspar and quartz, but it can also include many other minerals. It is extracted from quarries in very large pieces. Eventually, it is cut into slabs and polished to become countertop surfaces.

Stain Resistance

Is Corian impermeable to stains?

It can confidently be said that due to the use of acrylic in the construction of these surfaces, they are impermeable to stains. To prove this, acidic foods like tomatoes, if left on a surface for a long time, can seep in and leave marks even after cleaning. However, if this happens with Corian, the area can be easily cleaned without any residue using a cleaning pad.

Is granite impermeable to stains?

No, this stone must be properly maintained. Clean up anything spilled on the surface within a few minutes. Do not let oily stains sit for a long time; otherwise, they become very difficult to remove.

Maintenance

Maintaining Corian stone:

One of the goals that DuPont had in producing these surfaces was easy and inexpensive maintenance. To do this, nothing more than soap and water is needed. Also, if you're a bit meticulous, you can use ammonia, bleach, and alcohol for disinfecting the surface.

One thing that should never be used is abrasive cleaners, as they can quickly scratch the surface.

Maintaining granite stone:

Wash granite every day with warm water. You should also disinfect the surface once a week using a solution of water and isopropyl alcohol, at a 50-50 ratio. To do this, fill a spray bottle with the solution, spray it on the surface, and let it sit for 3 minutes. Then wipe the surface clean. You can use microfiber cloths for this task.

Never use cleaners with a high acidic or high alkaline property. Over time, they will react with the minerals in the stone and cause the surface to become rough and stained.

Sealing and Minor Cracks

Does Corian need sealing?

No need for this. The acrylic present in the stone prevents stains from penetrating. Daily cleaning is all that needs to be done.

Does granite need sealing?

Yes, you should seal it every 12 to 18 months. Some models should never be sealed, but it is a good preventive measure to keep germs at bay.

Scratch and Mark Resistance

Can Corian get scratched?

There is a possibility that Corian surfaces can get scratched, but it is quite unlikely. If this does happen, you can repair the area with epoxy and a fine sandpaper. You can do this at home by purchasing a repair kit.

Can granite get scratched?

Granite can get scratched, especially in corners. Repair kits are available in stores for this type of stone, and it is recommended that skilled individuals carry out this work.
